4 Common Side Effects of Chiropractic Adjustments

Receiving your first chiropractic adjustment is a milestone each person must encounter, to say the least. Within hours of walking out the door, you can often feel the tension and body aches melting away. In addition to some physical changes, you’ll notice several emotional ones as you continue with treatment. You may experience less pain and discomfort in day-to-day activities, have more energy, notice a mood boost, witness postural improvements and even develop a stronger mind-body connection.

4 Common Side Effects of Chiropractic Adjustments

1. Less Pain

Similar to others, you may notice you often feel fatigued as the day progresses. Although a shot of espresso will certainly do the trick, chiropractic adjustments are a much more natural approach to put some pep in your step. It’s no secret that being in a constant state of pain is draining. As your body directs the majority of your energy towards alleviating the pain, you’re left feeling weary, exhausted, and well, rundown. When you receive an adjustment, though, your body’s left pain-free due to decreased tension and compression on the nervous system. Adjustments spare your energy stores, allowing it to be used towards other enjoyable activities throughout the day.

2. Improved Mood

In addition to that pesky shooting pain in your shoulder that has since subsided, you’ll notice an increase in mood as you continue with your adjustments. Every emotion has a physical response.

You're happy, you smile.

You're stressed, your muscles are tense.

You're nervous, you get butterflies.

The same goes for physical ailments having an emotional response in the body.

You stub your toe, you cry.

You can't run around with your kids, your heart aches.

Your back constantly hurts, you're quick to snap.

When an adjustment occurs, the “feel-good” hormones known as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin are released which allow for healing to occur physically and emotionally. After the adjustment, you can leave the practice with a properly-aligned spine and a positive mindset.

3. Better Posture

Adjustments also help to create sustainable posture patterns so that sitting up straight, standing, running, and even working at your computer become easier. Before you know it, you’ll feel inches taller and like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.

Below is an example of postural improvements after just 12 adjustments. The image on the left is before beginning chiropractic care, the image on the right is the improvement over two months. You can see that the green line is the ideal posture.

When your ears jut out over your shoulders it makes your head feel heavier than it really is. For every inch forward your head feels about 10 pounds heavier than it actually is. It's like holding a ten pound weight close to your chest verse holding a ten pound weight straight out in front of you. Which do you think you could hold for a 14 hour day??

4. Increased Mind-Body Connection

Something many people may not be aware of is that your mind and body are a package deal. In fact, your physical health plays a significant role in your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. For instance, experiencing severe lower back pain may be a result from hunching over your computer all day. However, it also may be a result from the emotional stress you’ve encountered lately. Adjustments help to improve physical symptoms while altering mental ones. This allows your mind and body to align and positively influence one another.

After experiencing chiropractic care, people often notice that they can pin point certain movements, situations, and stressors that create the very problems they are working to resolve. They are better adapt to notice how their body feels.
